What Are Travel Bans and What Should I Know About It?

Hey Jetsetters,

This information is subject to change so don’t use this as the gospel!

The travel ban is an order that authority’s issue to prohibit a person from entering or leaving a country. It can be based on the court or police order for the protection of someone's interests. It is usually associated with a criminal investigation, debt failure or child custody.

Travel bans can also be associated with orders that prohibit all citizens of one country from entering another country. These bans are mostly based on safety issues: political or health matters or weather alerts. As soon as you choose your travel destination, check if you are allowed into the country to avoid unnecessary costs for travel fares and accommodation bookings.

USA citizens can travel to many countries around the world without even obtaining a visa. However, there are some parts of the world where they can.

  • Russia
  • First, you need to apply for a Russian visa. You will probably get it but after tons of questions.

  • Cuba
  • Sometimes, travel bans mean traveling across the destination country only in organized groups. That is how the USA travelers can visit Cuba these days.

  • India
  • India is on a bucket list for many Americans. However, it is much more difficult to get there than it seems at first sight. You must provide a lot of information about your hosts and your employers.

  • Somalia
  • Somalia is one of the countries which American travelers are advised not to visit for safety reasons. If you get a visa, still be careful not to break the local laws.

I’m thankful that I was able to go to Cuba. Getting there was actually easier than I thought it would be. I think a big part of me wanted to go because I was told that I couldn’t. LOL
